Aloe vera is not safe in pregnancy

Writer: Dr Tan Thiam ChyeDr Tan Thiam Chye

Aloe vera may work wonder for your skin but its safety is worrisome in pregnancy.

Aloe vera has many health benefits, but beware in pregnancy. Consumption during pregnancy is not recommended medically. The main worry - it can induce womb contractions and preterm labour. Aloe vera also contains anthraquinones, which is a laxative. Some animal studies also suggest that aloe vera can be potentially teratogenic and affect fetal development.

Thus, pregnant women should avoid drinking excessive aloe vera products. Topical applied aloe vera gel, on the other hand, is safe as the systemic absorption is low. It can be used to moisturise your skin and reduces itchy symptoms.

Most herbalists recommend to shy away from aloe in pregnancy as drinking aloe vera tea may stimulate womb contractions.

Breastfeeding moms must keep in mind that aloe vera extracts may pass through breast milk. Its laxative action may affect the baby’s gut and cause diarrhoea and vomiting. So, best to avoid during lactation.
